St. Mark's is proud to award $77,000 in grants to 24 community partners. The money represents the proceeds from the 2024 Chili Supper and The Treasure House. Committee Chair Gail Davis pointed out, “It is our tradition that all proceeds from the Chili Supper and Treasure House sales will go back to the community through outreach efforts, with no funds directed toward operational funds.” The checks were presented May 8 during a ceremony held at the church, 680 Calder, Beaumont, Texas.
Father James Pevehouse, Rector of St. Mark's, says the church's outreach fills a void for many of these organizations. "To hear about some of the things we're doing -- whether it's buying new linens or buying washers and dryers for some of these nonprofits -- it's really about filling a need. They can't get these things elsewhere," Pevehouse noted.
He says, for ministry leaders, it's a reminder why we do what we do. "It gives you the sense of satisfaction and joy that we are working together to make a difference in Southeast Texas, and it's the motivation to continue to do what St. Mark's has been doing with chili supper for 84 years, and with the Treasure House for 70 years. This is the day that gives us the energy to keep going," Pevehouse said.
Applications are available in January of each year. After the deadline, a committee will review each application to determine the 501(c)3 status and the appropriateness of the request. As might be expected, the requested funds usually far exceed the amount of available funds, so much thought and care are taken in allocating the grant recipients and the amounts.
