Rev. Christopher Hilton ordained to the Priesthood

More than 150 people gathered at St. Mark's to witness the ordination vows and to pledge their support in Father Christopher's ministry.

BEAUMONT -- Friends, family, and parishioners joined clergy from across the Diocese of Texas for the Ordination of Reverend Christopher Hilton on February 13. The elaborate service included the presentation, the examination, and the consecration of Rev. Hilton. The Rt. Rev. Jeff W. Fisher, Bishop Suffragan of the Episcopal Diocese of Texas, presided over the 90-minute celebration. Father Christopher will continue in his ministry as Curate at St. Mark's and as Campus Missioner to Lamar University where he hosts weekly Evening Prayer at Canterbury (Thursdays at 6 p.m.) in the Wesley Student Center.

St. Mark's plans "Platinum Jubilee" to celebrate the Treasure House's 70th Anniversary

Rev. Christopher Hilton to be ordained to the Priesthood Feb. 13

It is with great joy and excitement that we announce that our Curate, Rev. Christopher Hilton, will be ordained to the Priesthood on Friday, February 13, 2026, 6:00pm at St. Mark's Episcopal Church - Beaumont, TX by The Right Reverend Jeff Fisher of The Episcopal Diocese of Texas.

Deacon Christopher has invited the parish and the community to the celebration. He writes, "Please pray for me and my family as I prepare for this next season of ministry in Christ's Church. I hope you can join in person or attend via livestream!"

Parish staff transition: Lauren Johnsen to leave staff role after Easter

Dear St. Mark’s Family,

I am writing to you today to share some transition news about St. Mark’s staff. Lauren Johnsen has served at St. Mark’s in our children/youth ministries since 2015. When I arrived in August of 2021, I quickly saw how faithfully and creatively Lauren served. She was then leading our children’s ministry and a couple of years later assumed leadership of our youth ministry. All can witness the remarkable growth and renewal in these ministries and so much of what we celebrate today is because of Lauren’s ministry.

While Lauren, Chris, and their family will actively remain with us at St. Mark’s and in Beaumont, they have a new business opportunity to undertake together. This is indeed an exciting new chapter for the Johnsen family. Because of this new possibility, Lauren will need to transition away from her ministry staff positions at St. Mark’s. Though will still see the Johnsen family still regularly participate in our shared life at St. Mark’s, Lauren will not be doing so as a staff member. Lauren and I are working together right now to plan all the ministry activities for the Spring and then at Easter, she will transition out of her staff role.

I will be gathering and meeting with our families with children and youth in early February. This will be a chance for all of us to reflect together about how we best move forward in such vital ministry areas at St. Mark’s. During this time, I am discerning as to how we can fill this leadership positions. As we do this work together, please share your gratitude with Lauren for her amazing work at St. Mark’s. We have a robust and growing children and youth group that we will continue to build upon. As their parish family, let us together pray for Lauren and Chris as they step into this new chapter in their lives. Together, we at St. Mark’s will move forward in 2026 as we FOLLOW JESUS TOGETHER!

Canterbury, Episcopal Campus Ministry, Relaunches at Lamar

This fall, we’re relaunching Canterbury, the Episcopal campus ministry at Lamar University. Named for the historic seat of Anglican Christianity, Canterbury seeks to offer students a spiritual home rooted in the gospel of Jesus Christ, the rhythms of liturgical prayer, and a welcoming community of a thoughtful and intellectual faith.

College is a time of profound formation. For students, it is their first step towards adulthood and making the faith of their youth their own. They are asking life’s most fundamental questions: Who am I? What do I believe? Where do I belong? What will I do with my life? These aren’t just academic exercises — they are spiritual ones. And the good news of the life, death, resurrection, and ascension of Jesus Christ speaks directly to each of them.

The Gospel is the good news to students that their identity is not earned by their performance or striving, but is received as a gift fully and finally given to them in Christ. The Gospel frees them to live with confidence and assurance that they are Christ’s own forever, and that is a reality which is not dependent on them.

My hope is that Canterbury will be a place of deep formation for students and faculty alike. We are committed to cultivating the Christian life through scripture, sacraments, prayer, song, honest conversation, and deep friendship. We want to be a community where students can bring their honest questions and doubts without fear, where they can be challenged to grow in holiness, and where they can discover how their life and vocation fit into God’s great story of redemption.

Please keep Canterbury Lamar in your prayers! We had our first meeting on campus last night where six of us prayed Evening Prayer as we commemorated the feast of Thomas Cranmer, Nicholas Ridley, and Hugh Latimer. What an appropriate feast day to relaunch our unabashedly Episcopal campus ministry! Pray for students to find their way into our fellowship. Pray for clarity in my own preaching and proclamation of the Gospel. Pray that St. Mark’s would be a place of welcome and support for young adults seeking a deeper and more rooted Christian faith. If you know a student at Lamar — or if you want to help with hospitality, food, music, or prayer — I would love to talk with you!

Join the choir of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church for a service of Choral Evensong for All Saints at 5 p.m. on Sunday, November 2. The sung service of evening prayer offers an opportunity for reflection and contemplation.

Worship in the beauty of solemn holiness as the choir sings the "Preces and Responses" of American composer Katherine Burk Webb and two of the crown jewels of our Anglican heritage -- “Magnificat and Nunc dimittis in C" of Charles Villiers Stanford and Edgar Bainton’s anthem “And I Saw a New Heaven.”

The choir will also sing “The Road Home” of Stephen Paulus as we remember those saints who have gone before us. We’ll also feature an anthem of Craig Phillips (All Saints Episcopal, Beverly Hills) that’s a serene chorale setting of one of the Evening Collects.

Dear St. Mark’s Family,

I write to you with great excitement, having officially begun my curacy at St. Mark’s! This new season has been one that I have been eagerly awaiting for many years, and it is almost surreal that the moment has arrived. The celebratory atmosphere at our August 17th rally day was such a wonderful and hospitable welcome into what I anticipate will be very fruitful and formative beginning years of ministry. I speak on behalf of my whole family when I say that we feel very welcomed at St. Mark’s and look forward to getting to know you as we settle into this new place we call home. In my first week at St. Mark’s, I've attended vestry, spent time with the Holy Smokers Men’s Group, led three chapel services at All Saints, preached at the Tuesday Eucharist, and browned 40 pounds of ground beef! I’ve already added “chili-tide” as an unofficial liturgical season on my church year wall calendar. I can feel the excitement in this place and am energized to dive into the many ministries of this wonderful parish. I can feel the momentum and inertia that comes from a parish that is manifestly passionate about a church they love.

My curacy begins right on the heels of having spent the past 11 weeks working as a chaplain at MD Anderson Cancer Center in the Texas Medical Center. As a hospital that deals exclusively with cancer, almost every conversation was, by nature, down to the bare metal of reality. Life and death was the proverbial cloud hovering over every interaction in some way. And yet, the profound sense of faith, hope, charity, and resilience expressed by so many patients and their families in that place struck me anew day after day. I was often overwhelmed seeing that God truly works and meets people most powerfully in situations that would otherwise seem hopeless and impossible. In many ways, that experience was one where I saw the rubber of Christ’s love and mercy meeting the road time after time. Even in the midst of death and grief, I found myself returning to one of my favorite texts in our hymnbook (#355) where we sing, “All we go down to the dust; And weeping o’er the grave we make our song: Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia!” My time at MD Anderson was one of the most formative experiences of my life and has deeply shaped my own pastoral heart in a way that I will be forever grateful for. There are so many patients whose stories will be tucked away deep in my heart for the rest of my priestly career. I hope to bring what I learned there into my ministry through the importance of learning each other’s stories, being a spiritual companion to those who are suffering, and constantly reminding ourselves that our love for each other is ultimately love for our Lord himself.

I look forward to getting to know each of you — worshiping with you, serving alongside you, and growing together in the grace and knowledge of our Lord together. I am especially excited to learn from the faithful legacy that has been cultivated at St. Mark’s and to join with you in the work of bearing witness to the love of God to us through Christ in Beaumont. Please continue to hold me and my family in your prayers as we continue to find our footing in this new season of life.

St. Mark’s Choir joins forces for Hymn Fest 2025

Get ready for all of your favorite hymns, played by all of your favorite Southeast Texas organists!

You’re invited to join members of the Beaumont Chapter of the American Guild of Organists for an afternoon of sacred song. Get ready for all of your favorite hymns, played by all of your favorite Southeast Texas organists!

The service will be held S unday, September 14 at 5 p.m. at Trinity United Methodist Church , 3430 Harrison, Beaumont. It promises to be a fun experience. A reception will follow. Admission is FREE !

The organists will be joined by the choirs from St. Mark’s Episcopal, St. Andrew’s Presbyterian, and Trinity United Methodist.

Editor’s Note: Hymn Fest is an annual event hosted by the Beaumont AGO. We anticipate it returning to St. Mark’s in 2026 after the return of our Aeolian Skinner pipe organ.

Organ Restoration Project Enters Final Phase

The project is on budget and on time. Estimated completion and return to Beaumont will be in late 2025 or early 2026.

Earlier this summer, I traveled to Pennsylvania to see the progress on our organ restoration project. From the moment I arrived at Steve Emery’s workshop, situated in the bucolic hills north of Philadelphia, I was in awe. Everywhere I turned, there were pieces – pipes – components – of our beloved Aeolian-Skinner pipe organ. Steve and his team are carefully and comprehensively refurbishing our historic instrument. They’re receiving guidance from our fine organ consultant, Jonathan Ambrosino. During our recent visit, Jonathan and I were both impressed with the quality of the craftsmanship and the Emery team’s dedication to historic preservation.

Here are three takeaways:

The project is on budget and on time. Estimated completion and return to Beaumont will be in late 2025 or early 2026.
The organ reeds (think trumpet-sounding pipes) and blower are finished.
Much of the leatherwork continues. There are pieces of leather in the chests (where the pipes sit) and on the stoppers of wooden pipes.

Each of the organ’s 2,830 pipes has been cleaned and repaired where necessary. The pipes were then placed on a voicing machine to be regulated. The goal is for each rank of pipes to sound similar in tone and volume. Additional voicing work will happen at St. Mark’s once the organ returns. We are only making adjustments to regulate the pipework. Because our instrument is so historic, we are being careful not to make any unnecessary changes.

The project also includes upgrades to the console (where I sit to play) as well as the wiring and control mechanisms. All cotton-covered wiring will be replaced with plastic-insulated wire in keeping with National Electrical Code regulations. The console is being reworked to accommodate the new wiring and electric control system. This includes new “stop” knobs and couplers. Our original keyboards have been retained and restored.

Components — including chests and wind lines — will be delivered first this fall. The team will return later with the pipes. Then will come the massive effort to put everything back together. The aforementioned pipe “voicing” work will follow in the church.

The restoration will cost approximately $600,000. We are grateful to the St. Mark’s Foundation, our parishioners, community members, and SETX foundations who have graciously supported our preservation efforts. We are still fundraising to close the remaining $41,121 needed to fully fund this project.

Donations may be made online by selecting “Organ Fund,” or by check, noting “Organ Fund” in the memo line. Designated gifts may be made to the parish office via check or “On Realm” by selecting “Organ Fund.” The project is entering its final phase, and we cannot wait to welcome the instrument back to Beaumont in late 2025 or early 2026.

My Dear St. Mark’s Family,

As I continue to be away from you during this time of sabbatical, our faith family at St. Mark’s remains close to my heart. I have been following with great sadness, worry, hope, and many prayers the devastating floods in the Texas Hill Country.

Like so many of you, I am painfully aware of how this tragedy has touched and continues impact our beloved city of Beaumont. From our own past experiences, we know of the terrible devastation brought by disasters. We also know how critically important it is to rely on each other and our continual prayers. At this time, please continue to pray for each other. Pray for our Beaumont friends and family members directly impacted by these events, pray for all family and friends connected.

We have shared on our St. Mark’s Facebook page ways in which one can donate through our Diocese of Texas, with funds going directly to those in need in West Texas. Our own, Charles Teel, serves on the board of Gulf Search and Rescue. St. Mark’s has worked with Gulf SAR in the past. This group of volunteer service members are being deployed at this time, and such a group is also funded by the financial gifts of others. If you are moved and able, please consider giving in both of these ways.

For pastoral needs, do not hesitate to be in touch with Father Keith and Deacon Tracie. Our vestry leadership is also available for questions and needs. We have seen and we know that the grace of God is made present in the lives of each other…so remain present for each other. As you are able, come to church tomorrow and pray. I will be praying as well that God’s grace, comfort, and peace remain present in all lives impacted. I love you. I miss you. I am praying for you.

BEAUMONT — In an era where digital threats are increasingly prevalent, St. Mark’s Episcopal Church invites the community to a free, informative event titled "Personal Cybersecurity: Protecting Yourself and Your Family in a Connected World." The identical sessions will take place on Saturday, May 17 at 10:00 a.m. and Sunday, May 18 at 9:00 a.m. at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, located at 680 Calder Avenue, Downtown Beaumont.

Fr. Dick made an indelible impact on St. Mark’s story. He served as Rector from 1984 until 2000.

My beloved St. Mark’s family,

We shared the news today of Fr. Dick Elwood’s unexpected death this past weekend. Fr. Dick made an indelible impact on St. Mark’s story. Beginning his service as rector in 1984 and serving until 2000, he touched an innumerable amount of lives in Beaumont. Prior to arriving at St. Mark’s, Fr. Dick served in Kingwood, Tyler, and Houston. After leaving St. Mark’s, he served on numerous occasions at St. Martin’s, Houston and as interim rector throughout the state of Texas, most notably at St. Barnabas, Fredericksburg. Fr. Dick’s ministry touched many, many lives.

I feel a deep sadness after learning of his death. Fr. Dick opened his heart and shared friendship with me as I began my service as St. Mark’s rector. I know he did the same with so many of you. St. Mark’s is a special place. To me, and on numerous occasions, Fr. Dick shared how St. Mark’s opened up your heart to help him heal during a very difficult time in his life. The legacy of this parish loving on their priest is still felt today.

A parishioner shared with me this weekend of how it feels like we have sent out several death notices over the last several weeks. Though we can all attest to the knowledge of death being a part of life, saying goodbye to those we love is ever so painful. As we begin Lent this week, we will be encouraged to remember. Remember that we are mortal but also remember that we loved by God. Remember and bask in the good memories of those who have gone before us. Remember how our lives have been changed by their love. Remember their example and be inspired to carry forward a bit of their witness. Remember that as we grieve with heartache, God sees us and does not turn away. As your rector, I share in the ministry and legacy that Fr. Dick left in this special place. We will share service details when they become available. In the meantime, know that I love you and our loving God sees and meets us in our sorrow. Thanks be to God for the life, witness, and ministry of Fr. Dick Elwood.

Organ Restoration Project: Progress Report

We have only $55,308 remaining to fully fund the project.

Thanks to the generosity of the St. Mark's Foundation, community foundations, grants, and individual donations we have only $55,308 remaining to raise to FULLY FUND the restoration of our historic Aeolian-Skinner Pipe Organ. Will you consider helping us close the gap? Designated gifts can be made to the parish office via check or “On Realm” by selecting “Organ Fund.”

TIMELINE AND SCOPE: The project began in May 2024 when the Vestry voted unanimously to hire Stephen L. Emery, Incorporated of Quakertown, Pennsylvania to complete the restoration. As we spoke with experts across the country about the project, we were reportedly told, “Steve Emery is your guy. Steve is the man for the job.” And we agree. Steve enjoys a cherished reputation within the organ world, and he frequently visits East Texas to oversee maintenance on a historic Aeolian-Skinner organ in Kilgore.

In early September the Emery firm and its employees arrived and removed nearly all of 2,830 pipes and organ components. The project will also include upgrades to the console (where the organist sits) and to the wiring and electronic control mechanisms. All cotton-covered wiring will be replaced with plastic-insulated wire in keeping with National Electrical Code regulations. The restoration will cost approximately $600,000. The St. Mark’s foundation voted to cover half of that cost, and we are pursuing grants and fundraising to cover the remaining $300,000. Again, we have now secured $544,692, and we have roughly $55k to raise.

WHY NOW? Aeolian-Skinner Opus 1391 is considered one of the finest examples of organ building from this time period. Renowned American organist and composer Dr. Charles Callahan once called the instrument, “a magnificent work of organ building…that has been lovingly cared for.” We’ve provided regular maintenance, but the instrument is now 62 years old, and many of the components need restoring to preserve the instrument’s integrity for future generations. Our goal is a comprehensive refurbishment, to address all components of the organ. Leather is located throughout the organ chamber (under pipes, connecting tubing, and covering air reservoirs.) Experts tell us, the fact that the leather is still functioning after 62 years is nothing short of a miracle. It’s a testament to the quality of leather that was used and the construction of the instrument. The leather that will be employed in the restoration is superior to what was available in 1962, and we believe this is an investment that will last a lifetime.

WHEN WILL THE ORGAN RETURN? Late 2025 or early 2026. St. Mark’s has retained organ consultant Jonathan Ambrosino to oversee the restoration process. This will include visits to Mr. Emery’s workshop in Pennsylvania and a visit (or visits) to Beaumont once the organ is re-installed. After each pipe is placed in its proper place, each must be carefully regulated through a process known as tonal finishing. Our goal is not to “change the sound” of anything, but rather to bring the instrument back into regulation and recreate the sound parishioners heard decades ago – a cleaner, perhaps more precise sound!

I’m immensely blessed to be overseeing this project, and I look forward to answering more of your questions as the project moves forward. My continued thanks to Father James, the Vestry, and the Foundation for their unwavering support. God has blessed us with the people and the means to make extraordinary music at St. Mark’s, and I ask for your prayers and support during this restoration.

Bishop Doyle encourages Texans to support California fire victims

Episcopal Relief & Development has launched a "Wildfire Response Fund."

HOUSTON -- Bishop Andy Doyle is encouraging Texans to considering supporting Episcopal Relief & Development's "Wildfire Response Fund." You can donate here to the agency's fund to support the victims of the catastrophic fires in Southern California.

According to the agency's website, "Episcopal Relief & Development is working with local diocesan partners to assess the needs of evacuees and provide support in the coming days."

Bishop Doyle encouraged members of the Diocese of Texas to remember old Methodist words penned by Frank E. Graeff in 1901:

More than 1,400 people enjoyed St. Mark’s legendary chili during the 83rd Annual Chili Supper and Bazaar Thursday, November 14. It took a team of more than 100 volunteers to make it happen! We are so grateful for those who cooked chili (beginning in August), those who packed chili, and those who came to serve in a variety of roles on CHILI DAY!

And to our community, thank you for joining us and trusting us to fill your hearts and souls with a hearty bowl (or two) of our legendary chili. Join the choir of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church for a service of Choral Evensong for All Saints at 5 p.m. on Sunday, November 3. The sung service of evening prayer offers an opportunity for reflection and contemplation as we remember those who have gone before us.

Evensong goes back nearly five hundred years, with its earliest expression found during the time of the Protestant Reformation. Choral Evensong adds the glorious element of having the choir offer composed settings of various elements of the service, including sung responses, collects, and anthems. Evensong is the perfect opportunity to invite friends to come and experience our rich Anglican choral heritage.

Worship in the beauty of solemn holiness as the choir sings the "Preces and Responses" of William Smith and Herbert Sumsion's “Magnificat and Nunc dimittis in A."

The choir will also sing a relatively new anthem by American composer Elaine Hagenberg. She writes, “O Love” was inspired by the words of Scottish minister, George Matheson in 1882. Blinded at the age of nineteen, his fiancé called off their engagement and years later, as he remembered his heartache and loss, he penned the words...

O Love that will not let me go,

You are invited to join us Saturday, September 7 between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. to watch the packing process and help load a few pipes into the truck! Please call the church office, or email me if you’re interested in signing up.

St. Mark’s has purchased a digital organ that will be installed in the Church. For several weeks, you’ll hear only piano. We anticipate having the digital organ ready to use in late September. Speakers will be installed in the chamber where the pipes usually sit. It will look and sound different, but we’re confident God will still be praised!

"Navigating Tricky Conversations" - Sometimes conversations can be confusing or stressful to engage in when topics are tricky, or someone seems upset, or you just don't know what to say. During August, Deacon Tracie will be leading Christian formation and sharing some tips on active listening and empathy, and we'll try them out together. She'll also share some resources related to these strategies if you want to explore them more.

As part of our 150 anniversary projects, Dr. Dale Priest will be conducting a five-session series on John Milton’s epic poem, Paradise Lost. The class had been planned for Lent last year but had to be delayed. It is now scheduled for the five Sundays in September during the Christian formation hour between the morning services. Class times will be 9:15-10:05 a.m. in the Parish Hall at St. Mark’s, beginning on Sunday, September 1. A new, paperback edition of the poem will be provided at no cost. There will be no tests or reading assignments—just bring your book! Dr. Priest is a retired Lamar professor and a six-year member at St. Mark’s. You're invited to raise your voices in praise at the third annual Hymn Fest. The event will be hosted by Trinity United Methodist Church this year while the St. Mark's organ undergoes restoration . We're grateful to our friends at Trinity for graciously offering their beautiful sanctuary and lovely instrument.

The festival itself was conceived by Chris Richter, Dean of the Beaumont chapter of the American Guild of Organists, in 2022 as a way to bring area organists (and their congregations) together. This year, a half-dozen organists will be joined by choirs in leading a variety of hymns. From spirituals and American folk tunes - to German chorales and Anglican favorites - we've planned something for everyone. If you grew up singing in church and miss having that opportunity, this is a special chance to reconnect with some of your favorite melodies.

Hymn Fest is free, and a reception will follow. Please make plans to join us at 5PM on Sunday, September 8 at Trinity United Methodist Church, 3430 Harrison, Beaumont. Hear your favorite hymns played by your favorite organists!

Coming Home: Father Keith Giblin shared the following letter with the parish on 7/5/2024.

I remember it like it was yesterday, even though it was fifty years ago. My hands were sweating, my heart was pounding, and I didn’t know what to expect. I was visiting St. Mark’s Episcopal Church for the very first time. You see, my parents were the most attentive, loving parents that a boy could ever ask for. But we rarely attended church as a family. Daddy worked several jobs to make ends meet and Momma was busy raising four kids. As a teenager, I always felt like I needed to attend church, but just didn’t know how to go about it. And then, over five decades ago, I decided to visit St. Mark’s.

I remember how beautiful the church was. I remember how glorious the organ sounded. And I remember how friendly the congregation was. I sat up in the balcony and soaked it all in. The priest’s words touched my heart. I was baptized and confirmed in that beautiful church and spent the next several years worshipping in that holy place.

When my children reached school age, we naturally decided to send them to All Saints’ Episcopal School. Since they attended chapel every morning at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church, we made the difficult decision to transfer our church membership from St. Mark’s to St. Stephen’s. However, a big part of my heart remained at St. Mark’s. Somehow, I knew that one day, in the future, I would be back at my first church home.

Years later, Judge Wendell Radford, a long-time member of St. Mark’s, called me into his office at the federal courthouse. He looked me in the eye and said “You’re going to be a priest one day.” I was stunned. I hadn’t felt “the call.” I had a family, a full-time job, and a million other responsibilities. There was no way that that could happen and there was no way that I would let that happen. But, through the years, God called louder and louder. And I answered the call. I graduated from seminary and became a bi-vocational priest, serving for almost ten years at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Orange. But, in my heart, I still felt a call. A call to come home to the church that washed me in the waters of baptism, taught me how to be a disciple, and showered me with love. A call to come home to St. Mark’s.

My brothers and sisters, you made that call a reality. When Father James asked me to serve at St. Mark’s as an Assisting Priest, my heart jumped with joy. I am honored to be able to serve with Father James and Deacon Tracie who are like family to me. And I am honored to help lead a congregation that goes out into the world and does the work that God has given us to do.

In conclusion, I am so blessed to be called home and to be part of your church family. I love each of you and will see you on Sunday.

Vestry approves restoration of St. Mark’s historic Aeolian-Skinner Organ

Aeolian-Skinner Pipe Organ (Opus 1391) from 1962 is considered one of the finest examples of organ building from this period.

I write with exciting news! The Vestry has voted unanimously to proceed with a total restoration of our beloved Aeolian-Skinner Pipe Organ (Opus 1391) from 1962. It’s considered one of the finest examples of organ building from this period. Renowned American organist and composer Dr. Charles Callahan called the instrument, “a magnificent work of organ building…that has been lovingly cared for.”

We’ve provided regular maintenance and have already made upgrades to its electronic control components. But the instrument is now 62 years old, and many of the components, including leather pouches and pneumatics, need restoring to preserve its integrity for future generations.

In September, a company from Pennsylvania will carefully remove, pack, and transport the majority of our 2,830 pipes for cleaning and refurbishing. It’ll be exciting to witness, and it will be even more thrilling when the pipes come back shining and sounding good as new!

Our goal is a comprehensive restoration, to address all components of the organ. Experts tell us, the fact that the leather is still functioning after 62 years is nothing short of a miracle. It’s a testament to the quality of leather that was used in the construction of the instrument. The leather that will be used in the restoration is superior to what was available in 1962, and we believe this is an investment that will last a lifetime.

Dear St. Mark's -

It is with great delight that I now tell you of a significant change in my life. After much prayer, reflection, and discernment, I have accepted the call of Rector at St. Christopher’s in Killeen, Texas. I am excited about this new chapter in ministry. However, it is not without mixed feelings. I am saddened to leave this fantastic community and deeply grateful for the formation I have received as your Curate.

During my time here, I have been privileged to serve and learn with you. We have shared many joys and triumphs while grieving some significant losses. We have grown spiritually: deepening our faith and forging bonds of friendship and love. Your dedication to Christ, the Church, and commitment to the formation of new clergy has been a constant source of inspiration. I am grateful for the opportunity to have been part of this remarkable community, and I want to express my heartfelt appreciation for your unwavering support and love.

Leaving St. Mark’s is not easy for me. I will miss our worship, our fellowship, and all of the ministries we shared. However, I am comforted by the knowledge that this is the way curate programs are designed to work. I am also aware that you will continue to have Father James and Deacon Tracie here with you week by week. It is with a grateful heart and significant personal affection that I move to the next step, deeply formed by both of these leaders.

My last Sunday at St. Mark’s will be May 26, 2024. As I embark on this new journey, I ask for your prayers for me and the congregation of St. Christophers. Please know that I will always carry a piece of St. Mark’s in my heart and cherish the memories we have created together.

Once again, thank you for your love, support, and care. May God continue to bless St. Mark’s.

Dear St. Mark’s Family,

I know you join with me in excitement to learn of Mother Joy’s new call to be the next rector at St. Christopher’s, Killeen. Witnessing her ministry among us these almost two years, I know she will do a fabulous job in this new call, and it will be wonderful to still be in the same diocese!

While we rejoice in a new call, it is appropriate to grieve the change in relationship. Mother Joy has faithfully served among us and has been called to serve a new congregation. While bittersweet, this kind of change is not new to St. Mark’s. Our parish has a long and rich history of welcoming new clergy into our community for a season and then helping to launch them into further ministry. We are witnessing the curacy program working as it should. Mother Joy has ministered here, and it is now time for her to serve the wider church.

There will be time over these next few weeks to celebrate together. Mother Joy’s last Sunday to serve at St. Mark’s will be May 26. She will preach on that day, and we will have a reception for her after our 10:30 service on that day. It is a custom with a clergy person’s leave-taking for the parish to collect a financial purse for the departing clergy. If you would like to make a financial gift to Mother Joy, please bring it to the celebration on May 26 or drop it off in the office before then. If you write a check, please make it out directly to Mother Joy and not to St. Mark’s as there is not a tax benefit to this kind of gift. Everything collected before and on May 26 will be given to Mother Joy at the reception.

I am so thankful for the ways in which Mother Joy has opened her heart to St. Mark’s and how St. Mark’s has opened it’s to Mother Joy. Take time over these next days to express your gratitude to Mother Joy and share your well wishes in this next chapter of her ministry.

An Invitation to Holy Week at St. Mark's

Come and See: Walk this sacred week together. All are welcome.

Rather than jump straight to Easter, we invite you to walk with Jesus toward the cross. Together, we will move through the most tender period in the Christian year. We’ll move from the joy of Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday – to the Passion – as we celebrate the last week of our Savior’s life.

We’ll keep vigil overnight in the presence of Christ. On Good Friday, we’ll pray before a large wooden cross as we commemorate the crucifixion. But that grief will turn to great joy on Easter morning as we proclaim Jesus’ victory over death.

Come and see it firsthand at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church at 680 Calder in Downtown Beaumont. All are welcome.

Join us for Choral Evensong for Lent THIS SUNDAY, March 3 at 5 p.m . The sung service of evening prayer offers an opportunity for reflection and contemplation.

Worship in the beauty of solemn holiness as the choir sings the "Preces and Responses" of Thomas Ayleward and Herbert Brewer's setting of the "Evening Canticles in D."

The choir will also sing Edward Bairstow's arrangement of "The King of Love My Shepherd Is" and a new and haunting arrangement of the hymn "What Wondrous Love Is This" by composer Carson Cooman who was born in 1982. Cooman reimagines the familiar tune by using alternate rhythms coupled with a recurring counter melody.

St. Mark's will feature soprano soloist Angela Pickering. She is a native of Southeast Texas and holds a Bachelor of Music in voice from Lamar University and a Master of Music in Vocal Performance from Indiana University. She has performed as a soloist with the Houston Camerata, the Houston Chamber Choir, the Beaumont Interfaith Choral Society, and the Symphony of Southeast Texas. Angela will offer three solos including "The 23rd Psalm" by American composer Albert Hay Malotte who wrote the famous setting of "The Lord's Prayer." You'll notice this work features the same style.

Join the Choir and Clergy of St. Mark's for a beloved annual Epiphany tradition: The Burning of the Greens. From now, through Sunday, January 7, discarded Christmas trees may be tossed over the fence between the Gilbert Building and the Church.

On the 7th, we'll gather first in the Church for evening prayers and songs. Then, a bagpiper will lead our candlelight procession into the parking lot for the ceremonial fire. Food and refreshments will follow. All are welcome!

St. Mark's Celebrates All Saints' Sunday with Choral Evensong

Evensong is a service of reflection – of leaving oneself open that God may speak through Holy Scripture, prayer, and music. It is a poetic, deeply spiritual service that’s rich with symbolism and mystery. The service is primarily Choral with the Choir singing most of the service on behalf of the congregation in monastic style. Evensong has been offered daily in cathedrals and churches throughout the world for almost 500 years.

The choir of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church led a service of Choral Evensong for All Saints at 5 p.m. on Sunday, November 5. The sung service of evening prayer offered an opportunity for reflection and contemplation as we remember those who have gone before us. Music included the "Preces and Responses" of Richard Ayleward and Sir Charles Villiers Stanford’s “Magnificat and Nunc dimittis in C."

The choir also sang a new anthem by American composer Jake Runestad (b. 1986), “Let My Love Be Heard.” Runestad set the following prayer by Alfred Noyes to music:

Mounts to heaven and sings,
Let my love be heard
Whispering in your wings.

The choir was be joined by Thomas Schroeder, principal cellist from The Symphony of Southeast Texas, for “Benedictus” by Karl Jenkins. Mr. Schroeder also offered other music for cello and organ.

St. Mark's Hosts Southeast Texas 'Hymn Fest'

The Beaumont Chapter of the American Guild of Organists co-sponsored the annual celebration.

An enthusiastic congregation joined members of the Beaumont Chapter of the American Guild of Organists (AGO) for an afternoon of sacred song on Sunday, September 10. Seven organists led the crowd through an array of favorite hymns, played by seven members of the AGO.

"We were honored to host this event for the second year at St. Mark's. Our glorious Aeolian-Skinner pipe organ is among the finest in the region, and it was a treat to hear the unique sounds different organists created," Organist-Choirmaster Jordan Williams said.

The St. Mark's choir helped lead the singing, but all were encouraged to lift up their voices in praise! A festive reception followed in the Cloister. Photos can be found below.

St. Mark's celebrates Rally Day 2023

The Fall Kick-off included the annual Blessing of the Backpacks

Nearly 130 St. Mark's members and friends gathered on Sunday, August 20 for the 2023 Rally Day Celebration. The fun started early with Adult and Children's Formation, which now begins at 9:15 a.m. A festive Holy Eucharist followed at 10:30 with our Parish Choir. The liturgy included the annual Blessing of the Backpacks, with several dozen students, teachers, and educators participating. Check out our photo gallery below!

St. Mark's Rector, The Dr. James M. Pevehouse, noted the significance of the occasion. "Rally Day and a return to Fall programming is both a reminder of the ongoing life in our thriving parish of St. Mark's and a reminder that each new opportunity or situation is an invitation to continue learning. Keeping an open mind, by the grace of God, enables us to see that God always has the capacity to do something new!

A carnival-themed potluck lunch followed in the Gilbert Building. A hearty thanks to Lauren and Chris Johnsen for their extraordinary efforts making the day so special!

More than thirty children enjoyed a 'cosmic quest'

As many of you know, last week we finished up Stellar VBS. This year the theme was outer space, and we explored what it means to “Shine Jesus’ Light” into the world. VBS typically stands for Vacation Bible School, but perhaps it’s an even more appropriate abbreviation for Very Best Stories . Truly, the very best stories from my ministry have come from Vacation Bible School, and this year has been no exception.

I had a parent tell me that she’s heard her child whispering to himself our motto, “Shine Jesus’ Light'' in the week since VBS. He followed it up by saying or doing something kind to his siblings and friends. I am so fortunate to play a small role in planting these little seeds. Being able to watch these kids grow in their love for Christ is the absolute best part of my job.

I’m going to be very honest here, maybe too much so. Just like we discussed at VBS last week, there are times that God can feel really far away, and I’m certainly not immune to that. Although each Sunday morning my body is present in worship, my mind, many days, is running through a list of things that need to get done. While my relationship with God does not begin and end on Sunday mornings, our corporate worship is certainly a part of it. We all have reasons for feeling the distance sometimes. For me, it can be hard to slow down and be present, and although this distance is temporary, it sure doesn’t feel great.

Earlier this week, Father James asked if I felt recovered from it all. Even though there is still plenty of work left to do, somehow I do feel refreshed. As odd as it may sound, it’s just what I needed. Maybe it was the “space-air” (kidding!)? Perhaps it is because everything-the chaos and fun, the songs, games, and even the conflicts- all point to the love and joy only Jesus can provide or maybe it was seeing all the people who came together for the sole purpose of sharing Jesus with the children, or maybe God just knew what I needed! Either way, I left the week seeing Jesus’ light shining so bright that the distance doesn’t feel so far away.

Join the Choir and SOST for a free concert at 8PM on July 4!

The Choir of St. Mark's Episcopal Church will join the Symphony of Southeast Texas for their free July 4th concert at the Julie Rogers Theatre. All are invited to step into the air conditioning for a magical performance of patriotic music! The choir will be featured on several of the symphony's selections.

Maestro Chelsea Tipton recently joined the choir for a final rehearsal, and he was most pleased with their preparation and beautiful sound.

The Independence Day program will conclude at approximately 8:45PM, so you'll have to step back out and enjoy the fireworks at 9PM. All are welcome!

Celebrating the Ministry of Father Dean Calcote

St. Mark's hosts retirement party in honor of Father Dean's decades of service to Beaumont

Nearly 200 St. Mark's members and friends gathered on Sunday, April 30 to celebrate the ministry of Father Dean Calcote. His retirement from active ministry comes after decades of service as Headmaster at All Saints School and an Associate Priest at St. Mark's. Father James Pevehouse offered reflections and read letters from former rectors. Music Ministry Celebrates Service to St. Mark's

The Adult and Handbell Choirs gathered for an end-of-the-semester dinner.

The Music Ministry of St. Mark's gathered April 23 for an end-of-the-semester dinner. Members of the Adult and Handbell Choirs, and their guests, enjoyed an evening of food and fellowship at La Cantina in Beaumont. As you can see, we had enough people to fill an enormous table. Father James Pevehouse and Organist-Choirmaster Jordan Williams organized the event as a 'thank you' for the choirs' hard work and dedication.

"We are blessed beyond measure that these musicians share their time and talents with us week after week, and we wanted to find a way to bring them together to celebrate and say thanks," Williams said. Indeed, their ministry is vital to our parish life here at St. Mark's!

The Adult Choir rehearses Wednesday evenings from 6:45 p.m. to 8:15 p.m. and sings for our 10:30 a.m. service from August through early June. The Choir enjoys a respite during the summer. The Handbell Choir rehearses Wednesday evenings from 5:45 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. during the academic year. The Handbells will resume rehearsals this fall. Both choirs are always welcoming new members.

Mother Joy Celebrates Ordination

Dear St. Marks,

On Tuesday, I was ordained into the Priesthood. It was a fantastic night full of celebration, tears, laughs, friends, family, and guides from various times in my life. Jordan and the choir made beautiful music, and the Daughters of the King hosted a rockin’ reception with incredible flowers from Valentinos, complete with excellent food. I am beyond thankful for your support and prayers – my beloved St. Mark’s community. No matter if you were there in person, online, in prayer, or if this is the first you are hearing about it, I’m grateful for you.

Transformation is a funny thing. It happens very slowly and also all at once. Something changed in this service on Tuesday night. At the same time, something has been changing for months. Something has been changing in my heart in every service since I began to serve with and among and alongside you all in July. In fact, I would say, it has been changing in my heart since I was made a Postulant in 2019. Indeed, God has caused a stirring in my heart long before that.

As my beloved friend, mentor, and now sister in the Priesthood whispered to me as she vested me in the chasable, ‘may the external transformation match the internal one.” As a side note, that is the same chasable Father James wore when he was ordained to the Priesthood. It is hand-made from former altar hangings – there are many gifts and connections.

Like many transformations, this is one that I will spend the rest of my life living into. I am at once fully transformed and, at the same time, I will grow evermore into this identity. Think of it like becoming a Christian or getting married. In one moment, things are shifted, and yet, the relationship is just starting. We continue to learn and love for the rest of our lives. This will, of course, be filled with mistakes, but those will be made tolerable by the balm of community and the gift of God’s grace.

What transformations are you undergoing? What work is God doing in your heart? The Holy Spirit can be sneakily doing work so quietly that you barely notice until you look up and your whole life is different. On the other hand, the transformation might be world-shifting from the very start. The life change could be somewhere in the middle of these two extremes. Pay attention, my friends! The moments of transformation come fast and slow. But no matter what, know that God is with you.

Celebrating Father Dean Calcote

Dear St. Mark’s Family,

I became a resident clergy in the Diocese of Texas in October 2013. From afar, in the last ten years I have learned about and heard of many parishes. This includes St. Mark’s, Beaumont. I learned of the longstanding connection between St. Mark’s and chili! I have been amazed at the number of clergy and family who have had some type of connection to St. Mark’s, or Beaumont, or Southeast Texas. I learned about St. Mark’s deep community involvement through outreach. These are all things I knew about St. Mark’s from afar and I am so grateful to be experiencing them up close and personally!

Another part of St. Mark’s story I learned about, from clergy gatherings and Episcopal school events, is a person—Fr. Dean Calcote. Many ordinands visited with Fr. Dean through his muti-year service on the diocesan board of examining chaplains. In my own priestly experience with two previous Episcopal schools, I learned of Fr. Dean’s influence and impact in Episcopal education and the Southwestern Association of Episcopal Schools (SAES). Upon receiving the call to come to St. Mark’s, I have received the incredible gift of grace of working personally with Fr. Dean. I have learned so much about his faithful service to All Saints School and St. Mark’s. Since his arrival in 1974, he has worked with many rectors and clergy. His stable and faithful clergy presence over the last several years has been a gift of incredible grace to St. Mark’s. Fr. Dean, through his own life, shared his witness of caring for Maree during her sickness, and beginning a new chapter in life after her death. Fr. Dean has been and remains an example of deep faithfulness.

With a heart full of deep gratitude, I want to share what Fr. Dean’s presence among us will look like as we move forward in 2023. While remaining a vital part of the worshipping community at St. Mark’s, Fr. Dean’s active participation in ministry and leadership at St. Mark’s will come to an end. He will lead the Friday morning service through the month of February, as this will allow time for him to fully transition into the worshipping community at St. Mark’s.

With Fr. Dean and his family, we are planning an event later in the Spring, where we will all have a chance to gather, honor his priestly ministry, and most importantly, give thanks for the numerous ways we have been touched by Fr. Dean’s faithfulness. Please be on the lookout for when the date and event is set.

During these days, and as Fr. Dean sits and worships among us, take time to say thank you. We are a more faithful community because Fr. Dean has served so well. I give God thanks for the wonderful community of St. Mark’s, and the gift of grace in Fr. Dean Calcote.

New Year: Resolutions and Renewal

Dear St. Mark’s,

I went to the wedding of a beloved friend last weekend. She and her now husband are starting a new life together. It was lovely to witness them intentionally set forth on this journey. They were making promises about how they want to live together and the kind of life they want to have as they say, “I will.”

The night before the wedding, a friend I went to Seminary with welcomed a long-awaited child into the world. This baby is a newborn; he is beginning his life. So, while my friend is in the middle of his life, he is at the onset of his life as a father. It’s a new start in many ways.

Many of us make new year resolutions. We long for a new life. We tend to think, ‘this is the day the first of the year when things are going to be different.’ But, alas, many of us have messed up with these goals by this second week in January.

But there is good news. God is always inviting us into renewal. We don’t have to wait for the New Year, or Monday, or even tomorrow morning. Nothing is standing in our way. Starting again can be as soon as this next breath.

Ruach (pronounced roo-akh) is the English spelling of the Hebrew word meaning breath, wind, or spirit. This is the word used in Genesis 1:1 in the poetic description of the beginning of the world. It’s used several times in the Old Testament. Pneuma is a Greek word that means breath, spirit, and Holy Spirit. It is used frequently when the languages switch in the New Testament.

So, you might feel called to start again this week and going forward. You might consider that your life is taking a new path. You might want to make a new promise to yourself or to someone you love. If and when that happens, I have some ideas to consider.

1. Take a breath.
2. Remember this beginning.
3. Think of the Spirit that surrounds you.
4. Go forth and begin (again).

Dear St. Mark’s Family,

This past Tuesday, Deacon Joy offered the homily at Tuesday Healing Eucharist. Tuesday was the feast day of St. Nicholas and the gospel lesson used was:

Matthew 18:12-14

What do you think? If a shepherd has a hundred sheep, and one of them has gone astray, does he not leave the ninety-nine on the mountains and go in search of the one that went astray? And if he finds it, truly I tell you, he rejoices over it more than over the ninety-nine that never went astray. So it is not the will of your Father in heaven that one of these little ones should be lost.

I was very moved with how Deacon Joy spoke of the incredible charity for which Nicholas has always been known, and then how that kind of charity is seen in the love for the ninety-nine and the one that was lost. This point really resonated with me…it is both/and. It is the ninety-nine and the one that are loved by the shepherd.

We are still on our Advent journey and can begin seeing and feeling the coming celebration of Christ’s birth at Christmas. The deep love of Jesus, which Nicholas tried to faithfully practice, is at the core of our faith. This love is sheer gift, as it cannot be earned nor merited. We cannot make ourselves worthy to receive. I think this is part of why it is both so amazing and disconcerting to receive such grace and love. We might often feel like we must earn it (from the belief that nothing in this world is free), and when we fall short, we might also think that we are so unworthy that the gift should not be wasted on us. It can be so hard to rest on the belief that we are of value simply because God says we are.

I was visiting with a friend this week and they told me how messy their life is right now. There are family dynamics that are terribly complex, and it is hard to see how it can be and will be resolved. These friends are deeply faithful and bear witness to how this season of Advent waiting is incredibly messy. In our rush to Christmas, we so want things to be resolved so we can get on with the carols and festivities of the coming season.

Advent waiting might entail for you collapsing into the deep love of Jesus Christ. The mess in our lives will not be cleaned up quickly. There are not readily available answers to our troubling questions. It might be difficult to see how our own choices or of those we love can be redeemed. Yet, amid all of this, God loves, Period. God loves us. Perhaps a gift you can give yourself is to simply say, God loves me. If you are the lost one, God loves you. If you are in the ninety-nine, God loves you. Wherever you find yourself right now, trust you are beloved by God.

Advent: In Anticipation

Dear St. Mark’s family,

We’ve begun the season of Advent, waiting, anticipation of the birth of Jesus.
I attended an Advent service in my Mom’s (Methodist) church in 2018, not long after she died. The pastor, Rev. Dr. Cindy Ryan, was talking about how Mary may have experienced that period of waiting. It probably wasn’t entirely joyous anticipation, she said. I thought about Mary being sent away to her cousin Elizabeth’s house – to be hidden from judging eyes and gossip. I thought about her not knowing what Joseph’s response would be when he found out she was pregnant with someone else’s child – whether she might be rejected, or possibly stoned. Even if all those things turned out well enough that she’d be able to have the baby, birth itself was dangerous and had to be scary for a first-time mom.

Advent seems maybe parallel in some ways like waiting through the night for the sun to come up, literally or metaphorically. It’s not possible to force the sun to rise faster; we just have to wait. Whether the darkness we’re waiting through is painful or joyous – grief, confusion, uncertainty, or anticipation – there is a limit to our power to influence how long that waiting will be, and often we have no power to influence it at all.

I love something Barbara Brown Taylor wrote in her book Learning to Walk in the Dark: “Being in the dark is not the same as being in danger.” Being afraid of the dark relates to being afraid of anything we don’t yet know – like the future. Sometimes darkness correlates with danger, and sometimes it’s kind of the opposite – darkness can provide shelter for something to finish forming. In The Artist’s Way, Julia Cameron says “creativity, like human life itself, begins in darkness.”

Another way of thinking about darkness and waiting in between momentous events, appears in the poem by T.S. Eliot, “The Four Quartets”:

“I said to my soul, be still, and let the dark come upon you
Which shall be the darkness of God. As, in a theatre,
The lights are extinguished, for the scene to be changed
With a hollow rumble of wings, with a movement of darkness on darkness,
And we know that the hills and the trees, the distant panorama
And the bold imposing facade are all being rolled away—

If you are in the dark, see if you can slow down, even come to a stop, and let your eyes adjust as you wait. It could be that something new is forming in you, in us. Or maybe the set is being changed, so that when the lights come back up, a new scene begins.
