The Church’s practice of hospitality is both a reflection and an extension of God’s own hospitality to us in the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus.
Hospitality is not only or even primarily a human virtue, but rather is a virtue that has roots in the very nature of God. It is a divine virtue.
Jesus parable commonly known as The Prodigal Son could just as easily be known as The Parable of the Hospitable Father, because in fact the climax of the story isn’t simply the return of the wayward son, but the bountiful hospitality that the father shows him in welcoming him back home.
The ultimate icon of Christian hospitality is the crucified Christ who, at ultimate cost to himself has made it possible for us who were strangers to be at home with the Father.
The Greeters Ministry at St. Mark’s is living out this calling... making present the Divine virtue of hospitality to the stranger on behalf of the St. Mark's community. Greeters represent, for St. Mark’s, the Divine Welcome made possible by Jesus.
