Seasonal Events

There are all sorts of special events that take place throughout the year.  Here are just a few to keep your eyes open for:

Advent Sundays

Wreath Making 2

During the Advent season in the Sunday School hour, special programs are offered.  In the past we have done Advent wreath making, Breakfast in Old Bethlehem, and service projects.

La Posada

La Posada 1

Right before Christmas, we re-enact Joseph and Mary's search for an accomodation in Bethlehem.  We go from inn to inn until an innkeeper finds room in the stable.  Then we have a fun tamale supper fiesta with pinatas and mariachis!

Burning of the Greens

At the Epiphany 6 pm service, we process to the far parking lot accompanied by a bagpiper to create a glorious bonfire from the greens that have decorated the church since Advent.  We cook hot dogs and links, roast marshmallows and enjoy the great light in the dark night.

Shrove Tuesday

Help us use all the leavening in the church as we prepare for our Lenten fasts.  We cook dinner, symbolically bury the "Alleluias" (to remind us not to use them during Lent), and celebrate one last time before the Feast of the Resurrection.

Stations of the Cross

Walk the way of the cross with us as we journey together through Jesus' last days on earth.  The Youth lead the worship and the younger children form tableaus of the events from the Via Dolorosa.

Palm Sunday

Join us as we wave palm leaves and sing hosannas on the road to Jerusalem.

Flowering of the Cross and Easter Egg Hunt

Easterbunny

Children, young and old, are invited to join in the the procession at the 10:15 am service on Easter morning and to bring flowers to adorn the cross on the chancel steps.   After church on Easter morning we have an Easter egg hunt under the beautiful oaks.

Youth Sunday

This worship service is led by our youth as we recognize our acolytes and graduating seniors.  This service is traditionally the first Sunday in May.

Chili Supper

The Women of St Marks hold a Chili Supper every fall, serving a bowl of chili that has been perfected over many years.  Frozen portions and seasoning packets are also available in the weeks leading up to the supper.  The proceeds are used to fund outreach projects and meet community needs.

Fall Festival

Every fall St Marks hosts a festival whose program is designed to fulfil a perceived need in the community as our gift.  This need may be educational, inspirational, provide entertainment, or any fill any number of areas.  In the past, Christian acting troupes have performed, authors have expounded, meals have been served.  It is always different and always interesting!
